3 Steps to Build (and keep) a CEO Mindset.
I excitedly waited until January 1, 2024, to release a Coffee with Champions workshop on CEO Mindset. It was highly appropriate as we all sprint into a new year full of ambition and hope.
Here was the main question that I posed to our Champions:
Can anyone, no matter who they are, adopt a CEO Mindset?
What’s your vote?
Yes? No? Maybe?
What is a CEO Mindset?
At its core, it’s being the CEO of You, Inc.
It’s embracing that you are ultimately responsible for you.
You suck it up when bad things happen.
Or when you do something dumb…you take ownership and fix it.
The buck stops with you because…you are a Champion.
How NOT to Have a CEO Mindset
Blame others. Hold grudges.
Be stuck in the past.
Moan about how unfair life is.
Say things like…
“It was just meant to happen.”
“It is what it is.”
Here’s How I Keep a CEO Mindset
For me, having a CEO Mindset isn’t automatic. I have to work very hard for it. I have to embrace it.
I have to build it into my DNA. It’s like exercising. I have to keep doing it over and over to get stronger.
Here’s what I do.
1. I commit…daily.
Every day, I have the choice to actively be the CEO of Me or passively just let life happen.
Every day, I wake up and remind myself of where I am going. I’m currently using notecards for this. Maybe I’ll share more on this later.
I need to be my #1 fan, so I say good things about myself.
2. I believe every problem has a solution…the trick is finding it.
Solutions can be in plain sight or hidden.
My lack of experience in an area can blind me to the solution. I’m aware of this.
“I don’t know what I don’t know," so I sometimes have to reach out for help.
I have to try new solutions, even if they are uncomfortable.
3. I fight hard to Keep Inspired.
I track my wins daily to show myself that I’m making progress.
I read, watch, and listen to inspiring people. (see below)

William Ernest Henley wrote the Invictus poem in 1875 below after losing his first leg to tuberculosis and then being told he would have to have his other leg amputated as well.
