Would your rather protect yourself...or risk calling out greatness?
You and I have something in common. We have strong authority.
Say what!?
Yes. No matter what your job title is, you have strong authority.
You have incredible power (even when you don’t think so).
Let me explain.
This power comes from your spoken words.
Seriously. Let’s test it out.
Read these statements below out loud to yourself. (You may want to close the door, lest people think you’ve lost it.)
You’ll never succeed.
You’re not good enough.
Nobody really cares about what you think.
You always mess things up.
You don’t have what it takes.
You’ll never change.
You’re too weak to handle this.
People are disappointed in you.
You’re a failure waiting to happen.
Why even try? You’ll just quit.
Whoa, how do you feel after that experience?
What would your employees feel like if you said this to them?
What about when you arrive home…try saying this to your spouse, kids, or other family members. What would be the outcome?
Probably not good. The couch may be your cozy bed tonight.
Turn on the positive authority.
Let’s flip the switch and go a different direction. Remember, though, you gotta say it out loud. 🙂
You’re the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I know I can count on you.
You are one in a 1,000,000.
You’ve got exactly what it takes.
You make a real difference.
I’m so glad you’re on my team.
You inspire me every day.
You’re stronger than you realize.
You always bring out the good in others.
You make this place better just by being here.
You have incredible potential.
I’m lucky to know you.
So, how do you feel after that? Better?
What would others feel like if you said these things to them?
What impact would these words have on your family tonight?
You’d be their hero.
Their ceilings would become their floors.
Here’s the wisdom.
When you believe in people (including yourself) and say it out loud to them, it creates pressure and accountability that makes them want to live up to your positive spoken words.
But you have to say them out loud. Don’t be a dummy and say “they know how I feel.” No, that mindset is just lazy (and lame).
Your words have insane power.
This is why you have powerful authority.
Use them wisely.
Or as Uncle Ben from Spiderman said
“With great power, comes great responsibility.”
