What I Learned About Strength in 2024 (Part 1)
12 months ago, I went way out on a limb.
I put myself out there for all our Champions to see. And honestly, it made me feel pretty uncomfortable.
On our first public workshop of 2024 (a year ago), I publically shared my 3 goals for the year.
I was publically committed to growing in three areas.
Strength - Physically
Work - Sales skills
Rest - Living a more peaceful life.
Why these three? Because these are my main areas of life. (Read the article.)
So, did I accomplish these goals? Or did I look like a dummy? And what did I learn?
Here are my results.
Goal #1 Physical strength
For the first time in many, many years, I completed 12 months of strength training. While I’ve done a lot of running (multiple marathons and shorter races), consistent strength training has always eluded me due to unexpected injuries and pain.
Example: There was the CrossFit year where (I think) I tore my bicep on day one. I couldn’t use my left bicep for a year.
In my mind, I still have the strength and flexibility of 18-year-old Lance. In reality, not so much.
This year, I decided to take a different approach… find a workout program more in line with my age. I landed on Live Anabolic from Mark McIlyar. Specifically, the “Fit after 50 core program”.
Results & Lessons Learned
If you keep failing at something, try a different approach.
Learn the difference between soreness and pain. STOP when you feel pain.
Start slooow. Lower your expectations. The goal is consistency, not weight.
Being a part of the Facebook group was a huge help and motivator. To see guys in their 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s making it happen inspired me. They are where I want to be at that age.
Slight injuries may happen. Work around them and keep going. (I had this happen several times, but thanks to Jessica’s physical therapy skills, I was able to rehab every issue within 3-6 weeks.
After 12 months, I’m the strongest I’ve been in 20 years. I’m super impressed with my accomplishment. (Now, I need to tackle the fat in 2025.)
So, I’ll stop there. I’ll share more results in the next article.
Remember, you are a Force for Good!
