SHANNON MCCARTY - Primerica
"Shannon is one of the most giving individuals I know." - Will Roberts, SOCA
Will Roberts nominated Shannon as a Force for Good Champion. Here’s what Will said about him.
“Shannon is one of the most giving individuals I know. He weekly donates his time and energy as a member of the National Cemetery Honor Squad at the Dayton VA Center, helping to perform military service for those who have served our country.
Daily, for now, 2,950 days (over eight years), Shannon performs 22 push-ups to help bring awareness to Veteran Suicide. Here is how it reads on his Facebook page...
Shannon works for Primerica and is a regular at the Troy Area Chamber Coffee with Champions. Between his service, sacrifice, and dedication to the cause, Shannon is truly a Force for Good!”
Shannon, and his wife Angie are a lot of fun to hang around.
- Will Roberts, Relationship Manager, SOCA
Where do you work, Shannon?
Retired Navy. (20 years) Submarine sonar technician. Instructor. Master Training Specialist.
Part-time at Primerica (Life, Securities, Mortgage licensed) for 15 years.
Tell us a little more about your work?
I like the education aspect. My goal is to educate as many people as I can to plan for the future.
I take a 'No expectation, no obligation' approach.
I don't expect people to work with me, and I don't want people to feel obligated to work with me. I just want them to do the things I tell them they need to do.
I want to earn everybody's business, but I don't let that affect the relationship.
What’s one thing you want people to know about you?
I volunteer at Dayton National Cemetery Honor Squad, conducting military funeral honors for veterans.
I volunteer with Junior Achievement of Mad River Region, teaching financial literacy to kids.
I volunteer with CASA/GAL of Miami County.
If I could have a billboard, it would say…SERVE.
What's the best advice you've ever received?
My mother always told me, "Find something you're good at and stick with it."
I liked my job in the Navy, and I was good at it. I would have continued doing it if it carried over into civilian life, but it didn't.
I've also heard, "Find a job you enjoy doing, and you'll never have to work a day in your life." I feel that I've been able to combine the two.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Time travel. Not for personal gain but to be able to go back and observe significant historical events.
If you could recommend a book, resource, or podcast, what would it be?
Leadership and Self-Deception
Rich Dad, Poor Dad
21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership
The Greatest Salesman in the World
The only podcast I've ever listened to is the 10% Happier podcast. I'm not really into podcasts.
Tell us about your family.

Do you have any interesting hobbies or fun facts about yourself?

Where do you attend Coffee with Champions?
Troy Chamber of Commerce
How long have you attended Coffee with Champions?
Since the second or third session. (almost 2 years!)
What are some words you would use to describe the Champions program?
I look forward to it every week. Most of the topics are thought provoking topics and provide good conversations.
I like the camaraderie in the group.
I like that we can have open conversations and everybody is respectful.
What has been your most MEMORABLE workshop at CwC?
Stewardship. I also liked the Trust Battery and Purpose.
