MATT MILLER - Rieck Services
Strong work ethic with a commitment to "leave it better than you found it."

Where do you work, Matt?
Rieck Services as a Maintenance Sales Representative
Tell us a little more about your work?
I partner with commercial and industrial organizations to create a unique preventative maintenance plan that covers their HVAC, Refrigeration, and Plumbing needs.
I appreciate the opportunity to get to know an organization, what works and doesn't work for their needs, and how we can provide an option to alleviate their pain points when it comes to HVAC/R and Plumbing.
What do you want people to know about you?
I want people to know that what I say is what I mean. It doesn't always sit well with others through differences of opinion, but regardless of our beliefs, we can debate a topic and trust that I am true to what I say.
What's the best advice you've ever received?
As an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, a rule was to "leave it better than you found it.” I have tried to live that rule in many parts of my life by finding ways to better the situation or provide input on a solution.
A second piece of advice that has stuck with me is "respect is earned.”
Throughout my military and professional career, I have attempted to gain respect by not giving any orders I would not first do myself. Showing others that you are not above the dirty work is one step in earning respect.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I've never really thought about superpowers and wasn't much into comic books, etc as a kid. If I had to choose, I'd like to have the power of flight so I could get to where I wanted to go quicker. Especially with all the construction traffic in Dayton right now!
If you could recommend a book, resource, or podcast, what would it be?
Without question, Gary Paulsen's "The Hatchet". It was my all-time favorite book from the first time I read it as a third or fourth-grader and I have read it many, many times since.
My son and I have read the entire Hatchet series together, which grew our love for the outdoors.
Tell us about your family.
Two things I am most proud of with my family:
One is that my father instilled in each of us a strong work ethic that has never subsided. My dad taught himself everything he knows in the electrical and maintenance fields. He owned his own business for many years as a General Contractor. Even today, at nearly 70 years old, he is building my house.
The second is that I have six Eagle Scouts over three generations in my family. Myself, my two brothers, my dad and his brother, and my great uncle. At the time, less than 1% of eligible boys even got into Boy Scouts. Of those, less than 1% made it to Eagle Scout.
Where do you attend Coffee with Champions?
The Greater Springfield Partnership in Springfield, Ohio
What are some words you would use to describe the Champions program?
Each member of the group has been able to contribute to the topics in their own way, which allows the rest of the group to see from a different perspective.
This has helped me to understand my audience when I am presenting to a group or learning about a potential client for the first time.
I can utilize the discussions through Coffee with Champions to connect with individuals much better than I had previously.
What has been your most MEMORABLE workshop at CwC?
Each topic has had multiple takeaway points that have allowed me to grow personally and professionally. One of the most influential topics was about empowering the remainder of your team through active listening and understanding the things they are interested in.
Is there anything you wish to add?
I told a few members of the Greater Springfield Partnership group of Coffee with Champions that I could go to sessions at other locations that were closer to my house and work. I CHOOSE to go to Springfeld, a 30-40 minute drive, because of the people within that group and the relationships we have built over the last several months.
It is a very good feeling to know you have made a positive impact on people, and why I am humbled to have been nominated for this honor.
Thank you, Matt, for being a Force for Good! The world is better because of your efforts!
