Ever feel like you’re wearing the wrong nametag?
Not literally. But internally.
The one that says:
“Not smart enough”
“Too much”
“Failure”
“Imposter”
“Dreamer”
I’ve personally dealt with these wrong nametags before, and bluntly, they suck. They take hard work to change.
When your identity gets cloudy, your confidence follows.
You start hesitating. Holding back. Losing momentum.
Not because you’re weak. But because your identity is your built-in GPS.
But when you don’t know who you are, you can’t move with clarity and conviction.
If you have ever felt that...what about the people you lead?
They’re wearing nametags too.
Some were given by lived experience. Some were given by other leaders.
As leaders, we shape people’s identity more than we realize.
Our words.
Our tone.
Our feedback.
Our silence.
Communication creates nametags for people.
Good leaders, though, help people remember who they already are. Who they were created to be.
I like how Ken Blanchard puts it.
"Help People to Reach Their Full Potential. Catch Them Doing Something Right” - Ken Blanchard
And I would add, tell them about it.
Here’s the good news.
Nametags are not permanent.
If you don’t like the one you’re wearing, switch it out.
3 Questions to Ask Yourself
What nametag have you been wearing lately?
Who on your team might be mislabelled?
What identity could you help someone reclaim this week?
